Blogs and Motivation

When recently reading Anne's blog I was struck by her last posting about blogging and student motivation. Clearly, the appeal of technology is an important factor in motivating students to read and write on blogs. I believe that blogs tap into the very essence of the social construction of learning. It is through our interactions and relationships that we learn, think, question, and connect. By blogging, humans are able to forge connections and relationships that create the context for what could be infinite learning. Within the social context, then, blogging serves as an modern way to connect and learn. While one might question the authenticity of these connections, I believe that the more people blog, the more authentic the relationships become as readers repeat posts and interests lead to ongoing discussions. Bloggers are in essence creating caring relationships with each other, and therefore learning is able to occur in a very real way.

What do you think about my opinion? Is learning contingent on social connection? What do you think the implications of blogging are on learning communities? Is is different in person?

There is no question in my view that learning is a social process! I agree with you :)

I read Anne's blog, too, and loved the comments on student motivation and the enthusiasm they showed about blogging. I agree with you that repetitive bloggers can certainly build relationships with each other. Some timid students may also feel they can speak more freely when it's not in person, therefore sharing ideas that may have never been expressed.
